In Grade 1 music we kicked off the school year by relating our Essential Agreement to music. We discussed how musicians need to be respectful by listening to each other and appreciating each other's work, responsible by taking good care of our instruments and voices, and safe by paying attention to our space and focusing on our music risers. Just like every other grade, we are connecting to the Who We Are unit and learning how to match our school Code of Conduct to our choices.
We learned how to safely exercise our voice instrument to stretch and strengthen it. We learned how to treat our music risers properly by keeping our hands to ourselves and standing confident and still like strong singers. As you can see in our picture, we even learned our special music spots for when we sing as a choir.
We will continue discussing how our choices affect our identity as individual musicians and a group of musicians and how music shapes our cultures and in turn how culture affects our music.
In the next few weeks your children will come home asking about traditional songs, dances, and music games from your home culture, so please be ready to share some of your precious traditions with us so we can learn more about Who We Are.
