Grade 3 Students are Tuneful With Recorders
Grade 3 students are currently studying two Stand-Alone Music Units: "Rocking Recorders Part 1," and "Conversational Solfege Unit 3." Conversational Solfege is the curriculum that TIS uses to develop musical literacy in students in Grades 1-7. Grade 3 students reviewed rhythms from Unit 1 this week with the song "Closet Key." First, they sang it. Next, they decoded the rhythm of the melody using rhythm syllables. Here you can see 3P singing and decoding "Closet Key":
After decoding the rhythm aurally, students decoded the rhythm used in this song from the board. The rhythm of the song used quarter notes and eighth notes, and the students know to say "du" and "du-de" for these symbols. The students added this rhythm to their personal Think Books, and then the melodic fun began. They used the pitches that they know on the recorder, BAG, to try and figure out how they can play it. This is good preparation for their future literacy unit, Unit 4, which has them listen, speak, read and write Do Re Mi. Here you can see 3C thinking and writing their ideas:
Last week, one student figured out the melody nearly instantly using her inner hearing. Congratulations to Yeseo Lee, class 3C, for listening so well and using your listening skills to find the melody of "Closet Key!"
